Welcome to Western Australia

Pristine beaches, picture-perfect vineyards, enchanting islands and a sun that melts into the ocean. Covering fully one third of the Australian continent, Western Australia is the least developed and the most authentic of the Australian landscapes. Built for recreation, the state is like a huge theme park without turnstyles.

While the capital, Perth, has an international airport, it is considered the most isolated metropolis on the planet. Perth is a unique blend of British traditions and an inexhaustible richness, offering a lifestyle envied by Californians and Queenslanders.

Much of the state is barren desert - although in springtime the desert wildflowers carpet the countryside in colour - with only a handful of settlements and towns scattered across the vast inland. Despite this, the transport network connecting places of interest is excellent. Many of the stops along the way, including overnight accommodation, are at private homesteads and outback stations. Tours, either independent or guided, are for the young at heart prepared to forsake five star hotel accommodation to enjoy genuine hospitality in a frontier land.

In the extreme north-west, the Kimberleys offer what is arguably the wildest landscape in Australia, with many chances of adventure in Outback.

We also recommend the wild, fabulous landscapes of the Pilbara, with its multitude of colors, spectacular gorges, natural swimming holes and cascades -- a stunning contrast to the arid landscape of great Outback. (Map)
