Australia > Northern Territory

Welcome to the Northern Territory

The least populated but one of most interesting and perhaps the most authentic of Australian landscapes.
The contrast between the Northern Territory's arid red interior, and the tropical coastal climate of Darwin is quite dramatic. Ayers Rock is perhaps the most famousAustralian desert landmark, but the desert landscape itself, with its canyons, craters and lost valleys is arguably more stunning and well worth the time taken to drive through.

In the Top End, the city of Darwin has an international airport. From here you can explore Katherine and the famous Kakadu National Park.

In the Red Centre, Alice Springs provides the starting point for your exploration of the desert. There is also a domestic airport at Ayers Rock.

Due to the extreme nature of the climate, not all tours (particualrly camping tours around the Top End) run year round. Please check particular tours for details. For more authenticity and to avoid the tourist mass, we advise a safari camp-site. We have selected those offering the best comfort and most experienced guides.

A word of caution: While Australian reptiles (snakes and crocodiles) generally avoid human contact, they are known to be deadly. Crocodile attacks in Australia have only ever occurred within the animal's native habitat. Take note of posted signs and special care around billabongs (water holes), where crocodiles can lurk beneath the muddy surface and strike without warning. (Map: NB except within Kakadu National Park, most lakes and rivers exist only during the Wet Season).
