General Advice

Australia often appears from afar as one destination that can be easily visited in a few days or week. The visitor should be aware that distance and accessibility can make a quick visit impractical and incomplete. Australia represents 5 different and interesting destinations deserving each a visit in their own right.

  • Sydney can be easily visited together with Melbourne and Adelaide in one visit (the loop represents 3000km).
  • Queensland is a destination in itself, particularly if the visit is to include some islands and the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Northern Territory with its 2 different regions of the Red Centre and the Top End deserves its own visit.
  • Western Australia offers 12 500km of coastline and 2.5 million km to the adventurous as well as the epicurean visitor.
  • Tasmania offers splendid landscape, charming villages and a wealth of food and wine to taste and enjoy and is a destination in itself.

  • Documents : Valid passport. Entry visa issued by the nearest Australian Consulate or through your travel agent. No compulsory vaccinations. To avoid any problems, consult the Australian Consulate.
  • Currency: Australian Dollar (AUD), approximately US$ 0.50.
    Time difference : 12-13 hours in summer, 11-12 hours in winter.
  • Electricity: 240 volts AC special 3-pin power points (bring an adaptor).
  • Credit Cards : Visa, Eurocard, Mastercard, Amex, Diners. Your credit card/bank card will allow you to withdraw money/cash from automatic teller machines (ATMs) and certain banks.
  • Climate : The climate is varied: humid in the tropical North; dry in the Red Centre; mild and temperate in coastal areas of New South Wales and cooler in Tasmania. Avoid the North between December to March during the rainy season. The best time to visit Australia is during springtime or autumn when temperatures are pleasant and the climate is dry. However, Australia is such a large country and the climate so varied, that no matter what the season, you can put together an enjoyable itinerary.
  • Miscellaneous: Bring sturdy shoes, hat, sunglasses, and sun cream. Between December and March the seas of the tropical North may contain poisonous box jellyfish which are very dangerous. In general, the islands are not affected. Don't forget to bring your scuba diving licence if you wish to go diving, as well as medical certificate and diving records. A driver's licence is essential; if it is not translated into English then bring an International drivers licence.
